Choosing
The Perfect Frame
And Lens Combination
You
and Dr. Milano will select the most appropriate lens type. For example,
will you need a single vision, bifocal or progressive design? When
you are in the frame selection area one of our technicians will assist
you in choosing the best material for your needs. They will consider
your prescription, lifestyle, and the tasks you will be doing with
your new glasses and will make suggestions as to the best lens to
suit you.
There
are three basic types of lens material: glass, plastic (CR39) and
polycarbonate. All glasses arriving from the laboratory are inspected
for quality of workmanship, and defects of the lenses or frame.
Glass
is an excellent medium for the transmission and bending of light for
your eyewear. It is the most scratch resistant of all the materials.
Its biggest drawback is its weight. It is quite a bit heavier than
plastic or polycarbonate. Most people find the added weight to be
quite uncomfortable after a full day of wearing glasses.
Plastic
is the most widely used material. It has excellent optical qualities
and is much lighter than glass. Its biggest drawback is that it scratches
fairly easily. With proper care and handling, however, you can extend
the life of your plastic lenses until you are ready for your next
pair.
Polycarbonate
is growing in popularity because it's lightweight and impact resistance.
It is by far the safest lens available and is always prescribed for
children. Its biggest drawback is that in the higher prescriptions
some people notice distortions. After a standard hardcoat is applied,
its scratch resistance is similar to a plastic lens.

Choosing
A Frame
There
are several factors to consider when choosing a frame. Most frames
will come in a variety of colors and sizes when you find the basic
shape you like. When you try on a frame, you should look at the bridge
of the frame. Ask yourself the following:
-
Does
it sit on your nose comfortably?
-
Is there a lot of movement side to side?
-
Do the temples of the frame extend far enough back to wrap around
your ears to keep it from sliding forward?
-
Do you like the color of the frame on you? Most people prefer to
wear certain colors in their wardrobe.
-
Do
you like the size and shape of the frame?
